Do You Need to Play Control Before Control Resonant?
No — Control Resonant is a standalone entry point with a new protagonist. Here's what returning players get and what newcomers can safely skip.
The short answer
You don’t need to have played Control. Remedy built Resonant as an entry point: a new protagonist, a new city, and a story that starts seven years after the first game with its own crisis — a paranatural invasion spreading through Manhattan.
What’s actually different?
Almost everything mechanical. Resonant drops Jesse’s telekinetic gunplay for a melee action-RPG system built around Dylan’s transforming Aberrant weapon — no shared skill curve to carry over. The setting moves from the Oldest House’s brutalist corridors to open-ended Manhattan zones, so map knowledge doesn’t transfer either.
What do returning players get?
- Jesse Faden is missing and central to the story — Dylan’s search for his sister lands harder if you know who she is.
- The Oldest House returns in new areas, alongside the FBC, the Board, and Dr. Casper Darling’s FMV briefings.
- Hiss and Mold return as enemy factions, joined by a third force — the Patterning — that corrupts former paranatural persons into Resonant bosses.
- Resonant is part of the Remedy Connected Universe, so Alan Wake-adjacent threads (AWE, the FBC’s file on everything) are still in play.
Want a crash course anyway?
Remedy released an official six-minute “Previously on Control” recap narrated by Courtney Hope (Jesse) — it covers everything a newcomer needs in the time it takes to make coffee. If you’re buying before launch, our editions and early access guide covers which version to pick.
